Mechanism: It works by killing or preventing the growth of certain bacteria through the inhibition of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase.
Dosage: The typical adult dose is 300 mg once daily, or 150 mg twice daily with food to minimize stomach upset. The capsules should be swallowed whole.
Prescription: This medication is available only with a doctor's prescription.
Important Note: Rifabutin is an antibiotic and will not work for viral infections like the common cold or flu.
One notable and normal side effect of rifabutin is the harmless, red-orange discoloration of body fluids, including urine, saliva, tears, and sweat. This may permanently stain contact lenses. Other common side effects include:
